At the RHS we are passionate about educating everyone about the fascinating world of plants, how to encourage nature, and create a healthy and greener place for us to thrive in.
Horticulture employs almost 570,000 people in the UK and contributes over £28b to the UK economy every year – twice the amount of the motor industry! It is a growing and changing sector in need of fresh talent and up-to-date skills. We believe that a career in horticulture can be exciting, rewarding and ever more important as we recognise the need to protect our natural environment, and we are therefore taking steps to get more people to take up careers in our sector.
Our New Shoots initiative aims to inspire the next generation of talent by giving people insights into the horticultural industry and a taste of working in a public garden.
Whether you are looking for information about careers in the sector, a useful stepping-stone between education and starting a career, want to bring a job role you heard about to life, or are considering a brand-new career change, there is a lot to discover, regardless of your background or experience.
Want to hear from people already working in the sector? Visit our careers page to watch short videos about many different roles

The RHS Sustainability Strategy: Within the decade, we aim to become net positive for nature and for people, and to encourage and enable gardeners to do the same
“We are now painfully aware that we face a climate and biodiversity crisis, and that every effort counts. The RHS is in a unique position to harness its science, reputation and reach to help address this in a positive way.” Keith Weed, RHS President
