Environment Agency

We are the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment.

A healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to economic growth. We can’t do this alone. We work as part of the Defra group (Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs), with the rest of government, local councils, businesses, civil society groups and local communities to create a better place for people and wildlife.

We help people and wildlife adapt to climate change and reduce it’s impacts, including flooding, drought, sea level rise and coastal erosion.

We improve the quality of our water, land and air by tackling pollution.

We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations.

Our Climate Ambition

We are inspiring the people we work with to help the country to not only survive, but thrive through the challenges of a changing climate. We want to keep people safe and protect the things that matter to us all – our natural spaces, our wildlife and our future.

Climate Change is the biggest challenge we face. Our Climate Ambition is to create a net zero nation that is resilient to climate change. Putting it at the heart of all we do will help us and the country become better prepared for the impacts of climate change whilst taking action to prevent further climate change from happening.

Tackling the climate and biodiversity emergencies requires us to think and work differently, both in terms of what we do and how we do it. The commitment of our colleagues and partners and culture of our organisation is one of our greatest strengths.
