What are Green Careers and Green Skills

with NOCN, partners of WorldSkills UK

NOCN Group is committed to providing the ‘Green Skills’ of the future to support learners, centres, and employers with the transition to green economies and workforces.

As the world increasingly prioritises sustainability and environmental responsibility, green careers and green skills are becoming more important and relevant. They offer opportunities for individuals to make a positive impact on the planet while also advancing their careers in fields that are likely to experience growth in the coming years.

Whilst green careers are typically associated with the fields of renewable energy, environmental conservation and technology, nearly all jobs will be impacted by the move to green economies over the next decade.

Join in our free virtual interactive green careers and apprenticeship webinars this Green Careers Week

In partnership with Education and Employers, we will be hosting a series of virtual careers sessions – in celebration of Green Careers Week (6 – 11 November), where students will embark on a journey to explore diverse careers related to green and sustainability with EDF Energy, Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) and Air Products.

Students will gain insight into the variety of green jobs that exist from experts and apprentices (Gatsby Benchmarks 2 and 5), learn about technical and apprenticeship pathways (Gatsby Benchmark 7) and get a better sense of the importance of these jobs. The session will also include Q&A opportunities and interactive quizzes for students to collect interesting facts along the way.

Targeted at KS3, KS4 and above, visit our website to sign up for the session on Tuesday 7m Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 November this week!

Why are Green Careers and Skills important?

As the UK strives to achieve its ambitious climate targets, including net-zero emissions by 2050, green skills are essential for driving the transition to a low-carbon economy. Green careers in renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable agriculture, and conservation not only contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also create job opportunities and economic growth.

What Green Careers are available?

By 2030, there could be 694,000 green jobs in the low-carbon and renewable energy sectors across England. The types of jobs in the green sector vary and can include environmental technicians, agricultural specialists, wind turbine or solar panel technicians, nuclear engineers and many more.

How can I get into a Green Career?

Apprenticeships are a great option for people of all ages to break into the green sector. They offer the opportunity to earn while you learn with options to train right up to degree level.

A wide range of green apprenticeships are available, from environmental consultancy and business sustainability to forestry and wind turbine technology.  A range of qualifications and short courses are also available in subjects such as Energy Efficiency and Domestic Retrofit.

Where Can I Find Out More?

The government’s ambition to create 2 million jobs in the green economy by 2030 is an exciting opportunity for young people to develop skills which will help accelerate the UK towards net-zero.

Sessions are broken down into 30-minute slots and contain live Q&As, videos and expert career advice. Examples of the topics explored include:

  • The switch to electric vehicles and how it will revolutionise the skills needed in the automotive industry
  • New methods of designing and building houses to be more energy efficient is opening up new routes into the construction industry
